Audio racks are just that: racks designed to hold your audio equipment during either usage or storage. Coming in many different styles, racks allow you to have easy access to your audio equipment while keeping it well organized.

Balance

Balance your rack by mounting heavier gear toward the bottom of the rack and lighter items at the top. This will help keep the rack balanced wherever it might be sitting, keep it from falling over as it’s transported, and make it easier to carry and lift.

Electronic audio and music equipment can produce quite a bit of heat, which is sure to shorten your gear’s lifespan is to allow all that heat to build up. If a piece of gear gets really hot – any kind of amplifier, or anything with tubes, for example – leave at least one empty space above it in the rack to allow for airflow. Remember heat flows upward, so arrange the gear in your rack so that heat-producers aren’t affecting each other. In some cases a rack-mountable fan like the Middle Atlantic Products QFP-1 may be necessary to keep things cool.

If you are moving a small system from your house to the coffee house once a week, then soft racks may be sufficient. Soft racks provide compact, lightweight protection from dust and minor scrapes, while hard cases are designed to protect your gear from the hazards of frequent loading and unloading: the bumps, collisions with other gear and scratches, as well as dust and dirt. Some hard cases include shock mounts and some are ATA-rated for airline travel.

The most important thing is to take care when choosing an audio rack, as like any piece of furniture it should last you for some time. If the cost seems high on a rack you want, make sure it’s worth it. The improvement they can add to your sound is worth the effort.

Bass is clear, deep, oh, and LOUD! If you really want your HT to sound like an IMAX theater, then I whole-heartedly recommend this sub. It fills in the low end seamlessly. It also takes the burden of reproducing low lows off of your other speakers (which aren’t nearly as capable as the PSW505). This is not a cheap “rumble box”. The first movie I watched with this sub connected is Peter Jackson’s “King Kong”. The raptor/bronto chase through the gully is off the hook! The 30-ton bronto’s gallop will set up a standing wave in your intestinal tract!!! But loud does not mean muddy or rumbly with the 505. I was pushing the sub to about 50% volume and I thought my house’s windows may break. And like I said, that was only at about 50% volume. Besides, you want to be a good neighbor and not max this thing out cuz it can be heard clearly from a good 50 feet away. I find that it performs exceedingly well at about 15% of its capability in my medium/small sided living room. At normal/reasonable volumes, this sub recreates the super lows that truly make the difference between listening pleasure and listening rapture. No HT is truly complete without a sub and this one fits the bill to a tee.

a) I definitely WOULDN’T recommend this product if you live in a dorm/apt/condo/townhouse. This thing has the sonic capability to really anger your neighbors.

b) This sub is one of the few in its price range that actually has an LFE input (Low Frequency Effects) in addition to LL & speaker-level. I you didn’t know, LFE & Line-Level (LL) inputs both use an RCA connector. The difference is that the LFE channel carries only low freqs from source whereas LL carries the entire sound spectrum. The LFE goes straight to your sub’s amp whereas LL first goes through your sub’s built-in crossover and then from there to your sub’s amp. If you plug LL into the LFE input, you’ll be asking the sub reproduce the full sound spectrum. Not what you want, of course. Probably not a big deal whether you use one or the other. The Polk’s built-in crossover is fine, i’m sure, but I’d rather do the crossing-over at the A/V unit level.

c) Apparently, a good powered sub has an ON/OFF/AUTO switch, a 180-degree phase-change switch, a volume control, a cross-over level control (this control is not functional if you are using the LFE), a LL input (or two), an LFE input, and a Left/Right channel speaker-level input and corresponding outputs (for a total of 8 speaker wire connectors).

d) The unit seems very well built with what feels like sturdy wood (or MDF) and is somewhat heavy. Which is a good thing. It feels reassuringly sturdy/massive.

e) Would I buy this sub again? Well, I’ve discovered that many of the wonderful items

that are for sale at Amazon are no longer being produced. IE, they are discontinued by the manufacturer. Do a product search at polk.com and you will no find this sub (you can do a search in the product support section to find its corresponding literature pdf). I just guess that that is the nature of the beast. Great products sooner or later get replaced with even newer & greater products. The older and merely “great” (not “greater”) products still need to get cleared out of the inventory so they wind up at amazon.com or other e-tail sites. So, despite the fact that this sub is no longer in production, no longer supported, and is probably a year or two or three (or more) old… would I still buy it again? HELL YES!

Quite Possibly The Best $1000 Bookshelf Speakers Available

I’ve owned many speakers in my time and auditioned some high-end numbers from Paradigm, B&W, Axiom, among others, and believe the Polk LSI9 to be the class-leading bookshelf speaker in the $1000-1500 price category.

External: The first thing you will notice when you get these speakers out of the box is how incredibly heavy they are. To give you an idea, they feel twice as heavy as Polk RTi6 bookshelves (commonly available at box stores). The construction of the cabinet is absolutely top-notch and fit and finish is truly impressive. The top and bottom have a beautiful piano black, high gloss finish and the side panels have rich, dark oak wood paneling. The back has Polk’s standard diffusing bass port that allows placement of this speaker right up against a wall (or on a bookshelf) without degrading the sound or creating boomy bass. The gold-plated 5-way binding posts have been upgraded on this line to be more robust and replaces the red and black plastic binding post nuts common on most speakers and receivers with robust metal versions. The dual binding posts allow for use as a full range speaker with included jumpers in place or as a bi-amped or bi-wired unit. Nice touch. After you remove the front grill, you are greeted by that beautiful piano black surrounding two 5 1/4″ poly woofers, a rare ring-radiator tweeter (seen in other luxury speakers selling for multi-thousands), and two front resonance ports. Harmonic resonance in this cabinet is minimized with the ingenious use of these tuned ports (these are NOT bass ports, that’s on the back). I am very impressed with the build quality, fit and finish. A note about placement: These speakers are over 15″ deep and extremely heavy, so they don’t actually fit on many shelves. These truly work best on speaker stands or large table/desk units.

Sound: Form must follow function, so do these speakers sound as beautifully as they look? In a word, ABSOLUTELY. These speakers manage to competently handle an extremely broad frequency range. The ring radiator tweeter handles treble with grace and agility, without being harsh or shrill like metal dome tweeters. The ring design is much more acoustically accurate than similarly priced dome varieties and builds an upper-end high above its pay grade. The midrange is very full and warm, thanks to one dedicated woofer. The second woofer is reserved for midbass and bass frequencies and when combined with the rear bass port, accomplishes something stunning. If you close your eyes, you would swear this is a large floorstanding speaker with 8″ woofers. The bass impact is so visceral, so low that I thought I still had my sub connected, no joke (I checked). This coming from a 5 1/4″ woofer in a bookshelf speaker is an amazing achievement. I have never heard a speaker this size with this amount of quality bass. The frequency response appears fairly linear down to about 60hz, so in combination with a subwoofer actively crossed at 80-90hz, this setup is flat-out unbelievable. The sound stage of these speakers is impressive as well. Properly positioned and with the right recording, these speakers can give the impression of sitting in a large concern hall. They handle depth of soundstage with particular competence, but width is nice as well.

Logistics: We talked already about positioning of these deep, heavy guys, now about power. The LSi9s are rated for 20-200 watts into 4ohms. Make no mistake about it, these speaker love power. I currently run a Denon that puts out around 160 watts into 4ohms (100 watts into 8ohms) and it handles them well. I have them crossed over at 80 hz, which removes a bit of the energy-intense bass frequencies and gives me a bit more efficiency. If you want these guys to really sing, get an amp that can handle them. Additionally, biwiring them has yielded improved frequency separation and a tinge more crispness to the presentation. I can only imagine the kind of improvement you could get from biamping them. One more thing, while these speakers sound fantastic out of the box, you will get a noticeable improvement out of them after about 200 hours of burn-in.

Conclusion: What you have here with the Polk LSi9 is an audiophile-grade speaker that competes well with audio heavy-hitters costing $1500-2000 or more. This is a fantastic bang-for-the-buck speaker that is an immensely satisfying purchase. PLEASE don’t make the mistake of seeing the name Polk and thinking these are typical box-store speakers. I have owned many of Polk’s other speakers (RTi6, RTi4, RTi55, FXi5, FXi3, CSi5) and this is simply in a different class altogether. That isn’t to say anything negative about Polk’s other speak lines, I really enjoy them. It’s just to say that this is truly something special. Do yourself a favor and audition these speakers, you’ll be glad you did.

This is exactly what all the previous reviews said it was……a truly deep value for money. The bass is as deep as could be without noticeable distortion and it is clean looking enough to pass the wife’s scrutiny. I am a music buff and I find the bass production to be just as good as the very, very good sony sf 6000 front speakers I use. However the big advantage with this unit is when watching movies…..5.1, 3.1 or 2.1, the bass is way deeper than you can get with the big front speakers. The difference is really dramatic, even to a new comer’s ears.

It should be also noted that the unit DOES have an auto off function (not described on Amazon) which can be disabled at the back. This is great, except when actually watching a movie because it shuts of within 5 minutes if it does not receive a low bass signal from the amps, so during dialogue it sleeps in low power and then has a delayed restart when the bass returns.

The Sony SSC-N5000 center channel speaker (which I mounted on top of my television with two strips of Velcro) is definitely loud and clear enough to do its main job, which is to deliver dialogue. No screaming highs and no thunderous bass, but that’s not what this speaker is for. The frequency response is good, though, and overall this is a very nice speaker. Well-constructed and heavy.
